Hope For The Nigerian Youth

Coming back from class on this fateful day, I overheard two students of this prestigious university talking how desperate they are to travel abroad. This being a common phenomenon within our youths today didn’t bother me, but what caught my attention was when one of them said I’ll rather go abroad, work five shifts a day, earn a dollar than rot in this country. Deep down I wished his partner would reproach him but to my utter disappointment he replied Oga me I no get time for that one, when I get there I will marry a rich old lady, wait till she dies then inherit her properties. These are two able bodied Nigerian youths would have given up in the fatherland, the country that fathers fought to save and you ask me if there is any hope for the Nigerian youth? Ogunsanya oluwatosin is my name representing the premier hall, Kenneth Mellanby.

Just like the beggar that sits by the road side praying that you find it in your heart to drop a polymer note in its outstretched hand, we been paralyzed by our lack of vision, a generation with no mission, proudly bearing the NFA badge on our chest no future ambition. Like the football in the game of soccer we’ve allowed ourselves been kicked about by the economic situation of our nation on one side and our ugly leaders on the other, praying that the lesser of the two evils win, just like a mere commodity we have allow the forces of demand and supply dictates our future, yet we clamor we are the leaders of tomorrow but our tomorrow never ends.

A lion would never eat grass no matter the condition of the jungle I’ve been told but our lion is not only satisfy with eating grass but have moved on to eating on the refuse dump. He’s are satisfied with being the peacock that watches the eagle soar, attractive on the outside but clueless on the inside. His voice is heard only when he argues about his favorite football club, the latest in music industry and the craziest fashion trend but never in matters of national development, yet he blames his leaders who by their actions have pushed him to the wall due to his inactions, expecting a change when the most important ingredient is missing, the agent.

In the words of TY Bello we are the future but as it stands our future is bleak, truly the mighty has fallen but the youths have also refused to rise, believing the grass is greener at the other side but we forget how green the grass is depend on how well its watered. The raw materials present in our country isn’t what makes our nation, rather is the youths, the milk and honey we’ve heard of signifies the beauty of the youths and the sweetness that they exudes. The pride of our nation is the ability of the youths to rise above our situation and surpass any limitation and to take an active part in steering our nation towards its destination. For in a situation that our nation can’t build a future for our generation then our generation must build a future for our nation.

The regression to the beggininng

In the beginning of the world, Adam and eve were naked but as the Holy scripture puts it, immediately, their eyes were opened after eating the forbidden fruit, they became ashamed of themselves and they committed the first act of environmental degradation by plucking leaves (abusing the habitat) in order to clothe themselves. However, here we are, more than four millenniums after this occurrence and I cannot really grasp the logic of what transpired.
Our world is in a bad state, no doubt, but I still cannot find a term to describe the latest trend and wave of occurrences all around me. NUDITY is suddenly being celebrated and our sense of morality seem to have been flushed into extinction. Daily, our celebrities pose nude online and they receive applauses for this. Daily our female skirts become shorter and they also receive praises for this that I start wondering where did we get it wrong? or probably where did we get it right?.
The average female student come to class in a gown that would not even pass for a dinner wear. Yet we do not see anything wrong in this. The society has been infiltrated with this anomaly to the extent that individuals who do not conform with this trend are seen as the odd ones.
The implication of this “behavioural revolution” cannot be overemphasized as the society is already feeling it in terms of increased rape, incest, sex molest and sex abuse cases. If an “innocent” individual cannot walk an hour on our street without having seen enough “__”, then I guess we must find another definition for the freedom of movement. This is not to say that our supposed ‘civilization” is a bad thing entirely, it’s just that if things continue this way, then we must ask ourselves “IS THE WORLD REALLY GOING TO AN END OR ARE WE RETRACING OUR STEPS BACK TO THE BEGINNING”….

The power within.

There has been so many write-ups, literary compositions and speeches on the issue of success and how to attain excellence in life. The issue of destiny, the issue of dreams and the issue of achievements have all been over flogged but quite unfortunately, we still have a world filled with poverty, the state of our country, NIGERIA being a true example of this.
This state of ours has led many to the search for the secret of success and successful people. Many have read books, autobiographies, many have invested and many have labored hard, yet the mystery behind success remains what it is ; “a mystery”. Many have turned to God for the answers and even though I also believe in the God factor as the ultimate determinant of everything; both evil and good, I am of the strong opinion that “God will NEVER do for man what man can do for himself”. It might not be an element of pride therefore to submit that God has already put in man all he needs to attain the utmost heights.
As I earlier mentioned, most of us have dreams, aspirations and desires but usually somewhere along the line we tend to start telling ourselves that what we believed in the past can no longer be achieved probably due to some circumstances we tend to term as realities. Actually, I’ve also felt this way before and sometimes a still feel a rush of such sensations afterall, I always wanted to study law but here I am a 300 level student of the department of Library, archival and information studies. It is no gain saying that 80% of undergraduate students in Nigeria are not studying what they would have loved to, this includes students in the so called “lucrative course of study”.
Hitting the nail on the head, most people do not die happy as most people never achieve their dreams and this is why I want to emphasis this supposedly forgotten power that lies fallow in the heart, depths and sometimes subconscious of every human being: “The Power Within”. This is the essence that has distinguished the distinguished individuals of the world from the “undistinguished”; this is the power that has made certain people rise above the dictates of the circumstances and setbacks to the acme of their desires; this is the power that has fuelled the drive of many to the apex of their careers despite “unforeseen and unpalatable experiences”. This is the power of determination. The essence of successful people has always been that awareness that if only they set a goal for themselves and keep working at it, then it will manifest into success. In every aspect of life this “power within” is important as it is the only “virtue” that can guarantee excellence. For the constraint of your time and the space I have to write, I must reiterate the words of Zig Ziglar when he said that “other people and things can stop you temporarily, you are the only one who can stop yourself permanently” because “The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he knows where he is going”. Never forget that “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies WITHIN us”.

The ugly truth

To say life is a dream,

Can be synonymous to a fairy tale,

But I have seen fantasies come alive,

A prince charming and his beautiful princess,

A fairy god mother and an evil queen,

Snow white  and the seven dwarfs.

To many this is trash,

They will say wake up to the reality of life,

There are no happily ever afters,

No wonderland, no magical world,

No kiss can break a spell,

Fairies and pixies do not exist.

Lets take a look at this;

Life is actually a fantasy land,

Like Alice in the wonderland,

You were thrown into this world,

With no directions whatsoever,

You were welcomed by strangers,

They said you are theirs,

Named u and made u call them your parents,

Do u ever think this was real?

Growing up, you met people,

The world expects much from you,

Yet its gives you nothing in return,

How real is that?

So many conflicting beliefs,

Religion, culture and ethnicity

How come there so many of these things

Is this not a mystery?

Most of all, u fall in love,

How do u explain this?

They say love is blind,

Yet it sees,

How is that possible?

Its defined as a force of attraction,

Yet it brings about separation,

A feeling that brings about excitement,

With a touch of responsibility,

Mixed wit depression and jealousy

Can someone explain this?

Becoming a parent,

Its joy to some and a burden to others,

A happy feeling yet brings sorrow to some,

the bond between mother and child?

Two strangers meeting for the very first time,

Loving themselves passionately,

How the this come to be?

Do  u ever wonder, how come they love u,

Or u loving them,

Can u explain the anger u feel when they do sum thing wrong,

Or the love when they make u proud,

Yet u say life isn’t a fairy tale.

Finally we die,

Death!!!!!

Killer of all,

A man with no face,

Or maybe a woman,

No one knows, yet many falls prey to it,

I ask must we all die?

Why do we die differently?

All for one but never one for all.

So many questions needing answers,

The mysteries of life,

Are beyond our comprehension,

But we all say life is real.

Trust me life is a dream, we’ll never wake up from.
